INTERVIEW

Hello, Blake! Thank you so much for joining us today. First things first, I’d love to know, how did you first discover your passion for music?

Blake: Well I’ve always had a passion for music, even going back as far as I can remember but back when I was in grade school you had to choose between orchestra, band, or choir, and I ultimately chose the violin. I used to think choir was kind of lame, for people that couldn’t play an instrument. that followed through me to high school until my friends Nick, Teddi, and Maddie got me to audition for our schools show choir. which is why it’s funny looking back now on how I used to rip on choir so much, but after somehow making it in I found I could actually sing pretty well! That, and my show choir director, ultimately launched my passion for creating music. and it’s been my passion ever since.

What three words would you say best summarize your music as a whole?

Blake: Hmm, I think I’d have to say experimental, in the way I sort of blend genres a lot of the time. Raw, because I write from personal experience. Whether that be loss or gain, or just plain feeling. like I really mean what I write, I don’t sugar coat anything. I’d say emotional because with most of my music, at least as of now, comes from more of a perspective of someone who’s hurt. And I really want the listener to feel that and what i went though.

Who are some other notable artists that influence your sound and style the most?

Blake: Oh man I’ve had a lot, my taste in music has hands in many genres. for me as an artist and molding my own sound I take influences from the likes of Juice WRLD a lot because of his incapability to shy away from the reality of a situation. Also I’d say from people like Aries, EDEN, brakence, and Jeremy Zucker for the way that they can create and produce such an experience within just one song, or a record. I’d definitely say I lean on them when creating and/or producing my own music.

Tell me about your upcoming EP “EVERYTHING BREAKS” which will be releasing in April, what is something very special about this collection of songs?

Blake: Yes! Ah, I’m so excited to put this out. Well i began writing a lot and wanted to put out shorter projects until I gained a bit more traction within the music industry. I liked the idea of telling a short story in the form of an EP. And EVERYTHING BREAKS is and feels to me like an origin story. But once I had the story all put together it didn’t feel complete to me, like there was more I wanted to say, but couldn’t fit it all inside one 5-song project. so EVERYTHING BREAKS is only chapter 1 of 3, a trilogy if you will. But the concept of this one is that feeling when everything is going your way, that nothing could ever hurt you. But as with life, it can and it will. It’s that realization that this project is based on.

What is your favorite track on your upcoming EP “EVERYTHING BREAKS”, and why?

Blake: Truthfully, I really love them all so much, but if I had to pick my absolute favorite I’d probably say "TALK TO YOU" which I was actually was blessed to work with COTIS on this one. Such a talented artist if you’ve never heard his stuff. But I like this one a lot because it’s the one I really kind of flexed my production skills on. I played around a lot with my vocals on it too which was fun. Plus despite its more upbeat tone it’s about an ex girlfriend, and really one of the more depressed points in my life post break up.

What interests and inspires you the most about hyper-pop, anti-pop, and pop trap music?

Blake: Honestly I just love the tone, feel, and overall vibe of hyper-pop music. Whether that be the boosted and distorted bass or the glitchy vocals. It’s so fun to me and it’s really fun to make and mess with. And anti-pop and pop trap are so interesting to me because they take the best parts of both hip hop and mainstream pop and blend them so perfectly. Like my favorite genre is hip hop but I’m not a rapper, I can’t or couldn’t ever be a lil durk or a polo g. But singing over a beat that sounds similar to something you’d hear in hip-hop is much more my lane.

I’m curious, what exactly is your songwriting process like?

Blake: Back when I first started making music I definitely created the sound first and sort of felt out the lyrics as I went, but I’d say i’m coming into my own as a lyricist. Now I just write, like all the time. Even at my job I’ll have an idea pop into my head and I’ll have to write it down before I forget it. Then I’ll use those words and create the sound around it, like what I feel it should should like. But if you were to scan my notes app on my phone I think I probably have well over a couple hundred songs in there.

What is your interpretation of being an artist? What does it mean to you?

Blake: Like with all art or any medium I think being an artist is having the ability to express yourself in ways you couldn’t ever form or fit into any one feeling or emotion. And it’s the sharing that with the world so people can really see and relate those same expressed emotions. I’d say that’s what it means for me, it’s a beautiful thing, really.

How do you want your music to help or affect other people?

Blake: I’m a big believer in feeling and emotions. Even from when I first started I knew if at least one person could find peace in something I created I would feel like I won. Like I’m doing a good job, and that’s happened before actually, someone came to me at a party i was at and told me that one of my songs got them through a break up and that it really helped them. That to me is the most important aspect to what I do.

Most artists say that through their art they learn more about themselves, heal injuries… in what ways has music helped you?

Blake: Music is my therapy. Going back to my time at high school I was never really the popular kid, I mean I had friends and was friendly to people as much as I could. But I wouldn’t really get asked to hang out, never had friends over after school, never went to a party. Plans were made in front of me but then when I'd ask I'd be told it’s no longer happening anymore, yet social media disproved that. Even one time during my senior year at our last choir rehearsal before our last concert, this one girl passed out her grad party invites to all the seniors except me. We were standing in a circle, just the seniors because classes were done for us but we had to come back to rehearse for the concert one last time. To this day I have no idea why that happened, it hurt but as corny as it sounds music took care of me. Like one thing that I knew wouldn’t aid my depression was music. If I could pop my headphones in, I could escape. Everything was fine when the music was playing. And it translates through to me making music. Which is why I write, because it’s a means to let out feelings and emotions. It’s my personal safe space. And no matter what I’ll always keep creating.
