INTERVIEW
Hello, Xriss! Thank you so much for joining us today. First things first, I’d love to know, how did you first discover your passion for music?
Xriss: Hello! I’m not the one who discovered my passion for music. My parents and school friends pointed out my singing talent to me when I was a just a kid singing Disney songs in my living room with my little sister, Neal. It was a family activity that we did together before going to bed. One day, when I made my grandmother Eva cry as I sang along to “My Heart Will Go On” at the age of 9, I remember thinking “Wow! I must be really good!”. It just went from there.
It started with family, then my friends at school, then I started winning karaoke competitions, then I worked for an entertainment company, competed in The Voice, signed a management with Quincy Jones and so on and so forth.
What three words would you say best summarize your music as a whole?
Xriss: Pop. Arabian. Soul.
Tell me about your exciting new single, “Mister Mister”, off of your upcoming EP.. what is something very special about it?
Xriss: "Mister Mister" a mix of everything I am as a person, a trilingual Lebanese American pop singer-songwriter, influenced by where I’ve lived for the last couple years, Miami Beach baby! A funny little fact about this song is that it started off as a shower idea with Tyler (the other songwriter on this EP). The second he stepped out the shower, he sent the group a WhatsApp audio message singing the melody of the hook and it took off from there.
I see you also come from a very unique multicultural background! I’m curious to know, in what ways has your upbringing influenced your music the most?
Xriss: Oh, so much of my upbringing has influenced my music. The first decade of my life, my family and I spent in Nigeria. We only spoke English and I learned French, Arabic and Spanish at a considerably late age by the time we moved to Lebanon. Between my education in a French school, having a Swiss step-dad, touring the Middle East and Europe with an entertainment company and living in Miami Beach in the last couple years all took me around the world have all shaped ever corner of cosmopolitan upbringing.
As for the music part of it, I was at first influenced by Céline Dion, Alicia Keys and Pink. Aretha Franklin, Led Zeppelin and Ray Charles showed up later on.
Most artists say that through their art they learn more about themselves, heal injuries… in what ways has music helped you?
Xriss: I was severely bullied to black and blue in my childhood. It wasn’t until I threw myself into the world of live music that I realized I had something significant to offer to people. I thrive on stage. Even Stevie Wonder can see that! - Quincy said that to me once and I’m stealing it from him!
