"Creative writing allows me to practice being fearless, relentless, and vulnerable with little risk." - Ross Victory

INTERVIEW

Hello, Ross! Thank you very much for joining us today. First things first, could you tell me how you discovered your passion for music and writing?

Ross: The story starts around two years old, singing "Happy Birthday" on voicemails, and quickly shifts into talent shows and later mixtapes. I was always drawn to the arts. Specifically, singers that could write their lyrics. I thought songwriting was so special growing up and something to aspire to. Studio time has always been therapeutic - to process, play, and release emotions. I look at any creative space as sacred for "heart work." I respect the process. We think we have something to say or sing about, but the creative piece itself is trying to communicate something on its own. The creator witnesses it, and the audience witnesses it. The magic is when they align.

You've achieved so much as an author, songwriter, and brand designer! Could you tell me, what about your work are you most proud of?

Ross: My first book, "Views from the Cockpit," is close to me. I poured my whole heart (and wallet) into developing that project. As a first-time writer, there was a lot of trial and error with the publishing process. Little did I know that Views would be a launch point into other creative endeavors like music, design, and just personal development as a whole. Most importantly, my first book was a love letter to my dad, whom I lost in 2017.

Most artists say that through their art they learn more about themselves, heal injuries… in what ways have your creative endeavors helped you?

Ross: Feeding my creativity has revealed my place in the world and more suitable ways to cope with this life. Most people are consumers, not creators, yet we all were given the tools to build. If we allow the domestication process to take us over entirely, the creator inside eventually dies off. Empathy and our ability to connect with others die when that inner voice dies.

I have a lot to say about my experience. Understanding and owning my lens of the world was a crucial moment in my development journey. I have also noticed that I am resilient and don't die quickly. I have high pain tolerance, and I bounce back stronger. It will take a lifetime of effort to squash my spirit. I'm a creator before anything else. I am passionate and ambitious; most of my inner fire boils under the surface. Creative writing allows me to practice being fearless, relentless, and vulnerable with little risk. It also shows me that my life means something, and there's proof that I'm real.

Tell me a little about your father-son memoir titled, “Views from the Cockpit”.. what is something very special about it?

Ross: Views was inspired by a spectacular human being named Claude Bert Victory, Jr. I am his third son, and his very act of writing a book was modeled for me. The title comes from childhood memories of watching airplanes land and take off at LAX and the decades worth of travel experiences and life that followed.

What is the next “big thing” the world can expect from you?

Ross: Always more music and more books! For the past three years, I've been thinking about how I can take my fiction writing to the next level for maximum impact. And I'm almost ready to share. I want to create a moment similar to Hunger Games but for black and brown people based in L.A. A diverse, color cast with memorable personalities and aesthetics--something that is positioned for a film. Until it's done, my latest track, "Bounce," dropped on June 29 and is streaming everywhere.
