"Music helps us explore ourselves and discover our part in this world." - Underhill West

INTERVIEW

Hello, thank you so much for joining us today. First things first, I’d love to know, what is the inspiration behind your duo’s name, Underhill West?

Underhill West: Hello, and thanks for having us! It is taken from the the first book of the Lord of the Rings when Frodo needed a nickname to travel and fulfill his mission. That nickname was "Underhill", and this is our nickname too in our mission to spread our music inspired from the western civilization to the western world.

What three words would you say best summarize your music as a whole?

Underhill West: Groovy. Comprehensive. Subversive

Tell me about your exciting upcoming album, “Mission”.. what is something very special about it?

Underhill West: "Mission" is a concept album ideally listened to from start to finish. All the songs are connected with dialogues and audible situations which narrate an allegorical story full of statements about today’s social issues. It’s warm yet edgy with twists and turns that combine old school sounds with a modern pop vibe. To us, "Mission" is our favorite VHS movie from our childhood years.

There are so many great songs that will be on the “Mission” album, but do you have any particular favorites?

Underhill West: PixieLand TV of course! Just kidding.. when you’ll listen to the record you’ll see what we mean.. Mike’s favorite is "Trapped In My Adulthood" and T’s best is our second single "Soldier".

What exactly is your songwriting process together like as a duo?

Underhill West: There are many. Sometimes we work together on an idea in the studio, jamming with drums, bass, guitars, loops or just discussing a concept. There are times Tasos comes up with a beat and then Michalis adds melody and lyrics on it to create a song, or Michalis introduces a demo song and Tasos puts his drumming ideas on it.

How do you want your music to help or affect other people?

Underhill West: That’s a great question. We keep saying "Keep the inner child alive" everywhere out there, which we would like to be the final state of someone who listens to UW music. Truth is, we believe music made with passion and originality is a great companion, a friend you can rely on during hard times or good times, a spark of hope and inspiration. This is what our favorite music is in our lives and this is what we hope our music and lyrics could be in someone else’s life someday.

Most artists say that through their art they learn more about themselves, heal injuries… in what ways has music helped you?

Underhill West: We believe that creation is a mirror. Your song, your painting, even your child, is a fruit of your tree that if you observe it you see aspects of yourself, some you like some you don’t. Music helps us explore ourselves and discover our part in this world, which is a long and fun journey. Also, our music gets us into adventures and situations we’d never thought we’d ever participate, and made friends we are grateful for. Sometimes our music is our punching bag, sometimes is our secret diary. It’s a pleasure that we are still able to unwind all those thoughts.

In your opinion, what makes Underhill West’s music so unique?

Underhill West: For the studio projects we’d say the combination of easy listening pop elements combined with quality compositions and powerful lyrics. For our live gigs, time and people has shown us that emotion is our greatest uniqueness in our performances. We feel like it’s some kind of musical psychotherapy every time we play live the last couple of years.

After the album release next month, what is the next "big thing" the world can expect from Underhill West?

Underhill West: Our next generation of live gigs, we are up to something very unique and special. We hope to play in festivals around the country or outside of it and communicate with people that are interested in our work. Last but not least, the next album which will be a sequel to "Mission". Can’t wait to work on that!

Where will your group be performing next?

Underhill West: There will be a ‘Mission’ album presentation gig in Xanthi around the release (December 17). Christmas is a favorite part of the year so local Christmas gigs are on schedule during the holiday! You can get all the info about gigs and band news through our newsletter via underhillwest.com.
